Emily's Big Sister Bag

It's so important to me that Emily has felt involved in this pregnancy. I don't want there to be any jealousy - of course I'm not naive enough to believe there will be none, I know there is bound to be a little bit of jealousy at the beginning. It is going to be such a big change for her. All of a sudden there is going to be a new baby in her home, with her mummy and daddy. Although she seem's very aware of what is going on, I know it is still going to be a adjustment for her.

We have kept her as involved as we possibly can, she has come to our scans and seen her little sister on the screen. She has her own copy of the scan pictures which she treasures and shows anyone who comes into our home. She has picked outfits, and has plenty of big sister books to help her adjust to the change. I also wrote a blog post on preparing your toddler for a new baby, if you fancy a read of that and want to know more about how we are trying to keep Emily involved.

The other thing that we are doing is putting together a big sister bag. It will be waiting for her when she arrives at the hospital to meet her little sister and will be her little present from the baby. I know that this isn't for everyone, some people think that it is silly to get the sibling a present - but I disagree. Emily is just as excited as anyone in our family, if not more excited, about the new arrival. She suddenly has to share everyone, not just mummy and daddy, but her grandparents, godparent, aunties, uncles. Not to mention her toys and bedroom as time progresses. She deserves to be a little bit spoilt too, she has picked out a little bunny for her sister, and a little baby grow. They are her presents to the baby, so why shouldn't she get a present too.

I thought I would share with you what we are putting inside Emily's big sister bag, just encase you wanted some inspiration to recreate your own bag for your big sibling to be. The first thing I picked up was this gorgeous big sister cotton bag, I picked it up from eBay, I love the gorgeous print, and I wanted something that I could put everything inside for her. She is obsessed with bags recently so I know she will love this - I think they do big brother ones too! I then added a couple of blind bag items, twozies are her current favourite thing, and mash'ems are close behind. I know that she will love both of these and we wont hear the end of it.

The next thing I added was a book that we can read with Emily, the 'I'm a big sister' book by Joanna Cole will be perfect for her. It explains all about being a big sister, and what the baby can and can't do, for example the baby can't eat pizza and ice cream (two of Emily's favourite things). I thought it would be a nice way for us to sit and have some quality time together, but also a easy way for her to understand what is going on. It's such a lovely book and they also do a 'I'm a big brother' one too.

I have wanted to get Emily her own little camera for as long as I can remember. She is obsessed with camera's and trying to use my big camera - which scares me as I'm sure one day she will accidentally drop it. I have heard great things about the Vtech kidizoom, and after searching lots of places for one, I finally tracked one down in Costco! I love the fact it has a digital screen and Emily is able to take pictures of others, and also use it to take pictures of herself. I know that she is going to be thrilled with this, and I thought it would be nice for her to be able to take pictures of her baby sister (obviously when she is supervised).

I found this Dino-Baby book in the works the other day, and while I don't usually purchase many books in there, I knew Emily would love the fact it is a dinosaur, and a baby. After giving it a little flick through I'm so glad I decided to get it! I can see it becoming one of Emily's favourite books, the illustrations in it are gorgeous, and it tells the story of a big sister adjusting to life with her big brother. It is quite a simple straight forward book, but that is perfect for Emily's age group. The last thing I have popped in there is this gorgeous grey T-shirt. Emily picked out a little sister sleepsuit for our baby girl, so it was only natural that I found her a cute little T-shirt. I have got the girls matching big sis/little sis T-shirts, but they are in a bigger size and won't fit them straight away. I know Emily is going to love this little T-shirt when she see's it.

I know that a gift for siblings isn't to everyone's taste, but it is something I really wanted to do for Emily from the moment I knew we were having her. I would love to know if you put together a bag of goodies or got one present for your first child when you were expecting your second, or third?

  6. This is such a lovely idea, if in the future when we add to our family again I will have to try it, I was blessed that my two older children adored their younger sister so much that there wasn't any jealousy, but who knows what the future will be like x
