Plans For Our Balcony

As you may know we don't have a garden. We live in a top floor flat which is a pain at the best of times. I have found myself wishing for a garden many times, especially now we have Emily. I would love to have the space to be able to get her a slide and bits for the garden but sadly we can't and don't have one. However she does have grandparents with gardens and we are surrounded by lots of parks! On the upside we do have a little balcony. Last summer Emily wasn't very old, so it was very easy to keep her entertained and contained on the balcony. I simply popped some off cut carpet on the balcony and filled it with pillows and her toys. I used a old bed sheet to create a little tent/shaded area for her and she absolutely loved it.

This year is going to be a little more difficult, I have been thinking about how to maximize the space we do have, and what activities I can do with Emily outdoors. I thought I would put together a little wishlist of the things I am thinking of getting for our balcony, the activities I have planned and I will also keep you updated on our progress, hopefully it will inspire someone else who doesn't have a garden.

Last year we used off cut carpet, this year I want to purchase a cheap rug for Emily to use outside, as the balcony is concrete I want something that she is able to sit on without being uncomfortable. I know she would absolutely love this car rug, as she is obsessed with vehicles. The trampoline is something that I have been meaning to get Emily for a while, we just haven't had the chance. I think it will be brilliant for both indoor and outdoor use. The balcony screen is vital to our little balcony overhaul. It will provide us with that little bit of extra privacy, it will also provide some shade for Emily. Lastly a cheap little circle padding pool, we did have one last year and it was a massive hit, so I am really looking forward to getting her another this year.

These flower boxes are just as much for me as they are for her, I really want to plant some herbs and little flowers with Emily this year, and teach her how to look after and grow plants. I love the idea of a pop up tent, it will provide Emily shade from the sun, but also give her hours of fun. She absolutely loves her teepee but I think it will be to big to fit on the balcony. The pop up tent is the perfect size. I have been meaning to get Sam and I a little table and chairs to go outside, I can't wait to relax on a summers evening on the balcony. I love the fact they fold up flat which makes them really easy to store.

Do you have a balcony or garden? What are your children s favourite toys?

  1. Sounds like your balcony will be lovely - I've got a garden - there are lots of plants that suit balconies. Is it windy?
p.s. check the weight of the paddling pool on the balcony as water is very heavy (and difficult to tip away if you live above someone else)

  2. I have a balcony and a garden but the garden is on such an incline that it's basically unusable. I don't tend to let the kids out on the balcony as I don't trust it but we are very fortunate to live opposite a massive park so we spend a lot of time there.

  4. Sounds like a great way to utilise your balcony. I live in a flat too, but only have a Juliet balcony which isn't as good!

  5. It sounds like you have some great plans for your balcony. I have never been to a house with a balcony before. We have a garden but it is too big and I rarely use it, I probably should xx
